Update Elections in Guinea-Bissau Peaceful The International Peace and Prosperity Project (IPPP), BEFORE's conflict prevention project in Guinea-Bissau, is seeing progress in the country's move toward stabilization. Last week a number of global media outlets, including BBC News, reported elections were peaceful. As information-gathering organizations around the world indicate, there are still major problems in the country recovering from a series of civil war, coups, and leadership changes in the last decade. Yet the people of Guinea-Bissau have a vision for their future and countries: a freedom from political strife and instability. Their strong stand is seen in the 70-80% voter turn out to boldly make the choice to elect officials that would work to end drug-trafficking. So while the natural growing pains of a country are painful and complex, the people of Guinea-Bissau are showing the world they want a future of peace.
Joint Experts' Report on Iran Among the many challenges that will greet President-elect Obama when he takes office, there are few, if any, more urgent and complex than the question of Iran. There are also few issues more clouded by myths and misconceptions. In this Joint Experts’ Statement on Iran, a group of top scholars, experts and diplomats - with years of experience studying and dealing with Iran - have come together to clear away some of the myths that have driven the failed policies of the past and to outline a factually-grounded, five-step strategy for dealing successfully with Iran in the future. **** U.S.-Muslim ENGAGEMENT PROJECT CHANGING COURSE: A NEW DIRECTION FOR U.S. RELATIONS WITH THE MUSLIM WORLD Violent extreamism in the name of Islam poses a security threat to the United States. Yet the much-publicized divide between the U.S. and the Muslim world is not as deep or irreconcilable as many believe. This Report presents the first senior, bipartisan and interfaith U.S. leadership consensus on a comprehensive approach to improving U.S.-Muslim relations. Moving beyond current deadlocked debates, the Leadership Group on U.S.-Muslim Engagement has crafted a multi-faceted strategy to enhance U.S. and international security. **** Ahtisaari Wins Nobel Peace Prize AfP wishes to recognize Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland and career public servant, for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 10, 2008, “for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts.” He has a long list of accomplishments in the peacebuilding field: in 1989-90 Ahtisaari helped supervise Namibia’s transition to independence; in 1999 and again in 2005 to 2007, he helped facilitate a resolution to the Kosovo conflict; in 2005 he worked with his Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) to end thirty years of violent fighting in Aceh in Indonesia; and this year, Ahtisaari and CMI have strived to bring a peaceful conclusion to the Iraq conflict. Ahtisaari has also contributed to conflict resolution efforts in Northern Ireland, the Horn of Africa, and in Central Asia. As the Norwegian Nobel Committee realized, “he has shown what role mediation of various kinds can play in the resolution of international conflicts.” His efforts and achievements are truly an inspiration to AfP and the peacebuilding community. ****
