The purpose of the Mali Affinity Group is to facilitate sharing of information and ideas and to promote open dialogue, collaboration, strategic partnerships and activities for more effective support for Mali among NGOs, the US government (i.e. Federal, State and Local officials), Mali civil society and the private sector, and the government of Mali. The group is a vibrant mix of passionate peacebuilders, government officials, and the Mali diaspora, all working towards building sustainable peace in Mali.
The group meets on a quarterly basis at AfP headquarters, to share the latest news regarding events on the ground, and to explore opportunities for collaboration and strategic partnerships among participants.
Under the leadership of Vivian Lowery Derryck, Mali Moving Forward grew out of an initiative known as Mali Watch that was created by NGO leaders and government officials concerned about the violence that erupted in Mali in 2012. As the violence subsided and as a new government emerged with renewed hope for peace and progress, the name was changed to Mali Moving Forward. The group planned to function only until conditions stabilized with a target end date of the summer of 2015. While conditions in Mali have improved significantly, the group agreed to continue meeting beyond 2015 as an Affinity Group of the Alliance for Peacebuilding.
