International Alert today
Twenty years on Alert is a leading peacebuilding organisation working in over 20 countries and territories around the world. We are committed to:
- Working directly with people affected by violent conflict in support of their efforts to improve their prospects for peace:
This means forming partnerships locally and regionally to develop mutual understanding between those divided by conflict and to identify new solutions to persistent problems.
- Shaping international policy and practice that affect peacebuilding:
This means working at government, EU and UN levels to help decision-makers understand the impact of their actions and include the perspectives of war-torn communities.
- Strengthening the expertise, impact and public profile of the peacebuilding sector:
This means raising awareness of the importance of peacebuilding and working within the sector to improve ways of addressing the root causes of violent conflict.
Our regional work is based in the Great Lakes region of Africa, West Africa, the Caucasus, the Andean region of South America, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Philippines. Our advocacy work is both in countries affected by conflict and places where governments or global institutions are based, such as Brussels and New York. Our public awareness-raising takes place in the UK and in the regions where we work.
We currently focus on the role of gender, security, business, humanitarian aid and development, and post-conflict reconstruction in the context of building peace.
The problem is not conflict – the problem is violent conflict.
