Peace X Peace Contact: Mary Liepold, Director of Development maryl@peacexpeace.org Founded in 2002 by executive director Patricia Smith Melton, PEACE X PEACE started with a three-day forum of six women experts in peace and women’s rights. They gathered to answer the question, “What is peace, and how can women be empowered to create it?” The women represented a mix of religious beliefs and cultures, and their conclusions defined the vision and founding principles of PEACE X PEACE. Just as women know the results of violence, they know what their families and communities need to survive and thrive: sustainable peace. PEACE X PEACE believes that sustainable peace is built on the components of safety, food and shelter, financial means, education, freedom to speak and travel, justice, and, most importantly, the ability to hope and believe in a better future. The mission of PEACE X PEACE is to improve the status of women and build sustainable peace. To achieve these goals, PEACE X PEACE assists women in reaching their full potential as leaders and decision-makers alongside men by providing women with an innovative tool: our Internet-based Global Network, which facilitates direct online communications between women-led groups ("Circles") across the United States and Sister Circles around the world. PEACE X PEACE is creating a world where women play a significant role in building sustainable peace. Through balanced partnerships—locally and globally—women and men together will transform fear and hostility into actions that build harmonious cultures. We are dedicated to creating a world where women are no longer those most tragically affected by conflict and crisis, and instead play a central role in building sustainable peace.
