Washington, DC, USA — The Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP), a network of almost 300 organizations working to prevent violent conflict and build sustainable peace in 181 countries, once again calls on President Trump to prioritize diplomacy over threats that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran does not meet his demands. This escalation could amount to violation of international law—including the Genocide Convention and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court—and brings the region and the world closer to a full-blown crisis. The law is also clear that civilians must not be targeted and must be protected from indiscriminate or disproportionate attacks. We urge the U.S. Government to choose diplomacy over arbitrary deadlines to end the war and humanitarian suffering.

The Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP), named the “number one influencer and change agent” among peacebuilding institutions worldwide, is an award-winning nonprofit and nonpartisan network of almost 300 organizations working in 181 countries to prevent and reduce violent conflict and build sustainable peace. AfP cultivates a network to strengthen and advance the peacebuilding field, enabling peacebuilding organizations to achieve greater impact—tackling issues too large for any one organization to address alone.
