Washington, DC, USA — As the war in Iran now moves into its second month, the Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP), a network of almost 300 organizations working to prevent violent conflict and build sustainable peace in 181 countries, once again calls on all parties to urgently end the war.

As AfP previously warned, the conflict is causing a full-blown regional crisis with global implications and significant civilian losses. U.S. and Israeli strikes have struck tens of thousands of civilian sites in Iran, including hundreds of schools. Preliminary inquiries have concluded that, during the first day of the war, the U.S. carried out a deadly missile strike on the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school, leaving hundreds of schoolgirls dead. Retaliatory strikes by Iran have targeted civilian infrastructure across the wider region, including hotels, airports, aluminum smelters, and desalination plants. And the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has sent shockwaves around the global economy. Countries across Africa, including some of the most conflict-affected and fragile, must now take dramatic measures to deal with oil shortages caused by the war, such as diluting petrol and restricting electricity consumption.

Amidst increasingly intense rhetoric from world leaders, growing uncertainty around U.S. objectives in the conflict, and renewed threats against infrastructure in the region, AfP’s concern over serious violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law is growing. While we call for the end of the war through diplomatic measures, it is vital that all parties uphold international law to protect civilians and ensure its equal application.

The Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP), named the “number one influencer and change agent” among peacebuilding institutions worldwide, is an award-winning nonprofit and nonpartisan network of almost 300 organizations working in 181 countries to prevent and reduce violent conflict and build sustainable peace. AfP cultivates a network to strengthen and advance the peacebuilding field, enabling peacebuilding organizations to achieve greater impact—tackling issues too large for any one organization to address alone.
